Miss GEICO Racing, Locals, Fans and Tourists All Win During Season Opener
The Season opener for the 2011 Super Boat International Racing Series was held this past weekend in Cocoa Beach, Fla. with the World’s fastest boats racing in perfect conditions on the Atlantic Coast, and Miss GEICO Racing taking the top spot. Fans were treated to a spectacular day of racing during the 2nd Annual Brighthouse Networks Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix. Twenty-seven teams competed during the Sunday event and race teams treated fans to amazing speeds along with lead changes and near photo finishes.
Even though Edward Smith, the head of the Offshore Powerboat Association, has a full name, the only one he needs among the OPA faithful is “Smitty.” (He’s like Madonna and Prince that way.) When I caught with him yesterday before the Sunny Isles OPA race, he was busy getting his own “Wazzup” boats ready (he races one Fountain with his son Anthony in Super V and then Anthony races in another Activator as “Wazzup II” in Class 6 with younger son Nicholas) and overseeing the activity in the pits for the whole race.
Team Velocity, Hawaiian Tropic and Miss GEICO Win In Sarasota
Race teams converged on Sarasota, Florida last weekend for an exciting day of offshore racing with local teams, Team Velocity (P4) and Team Hawaiian Tropic (P2), taking first place in their respective classes. Miss GEICO Offshore racing, the fastest boat on the course, took top honors during the 27th running of the Suncoast Offshore Super Boat Grand Prix Festival.

The second round of the Amsoil Offshore Racing Series made its stop in beautiful St. Clair, Mich., for the 17th Annual St. Clair River Classic last weekend. Although with 37 entries spanning multiple classes, the boat count was down from that of previous years—the event has seen as many as 55 boats in the field—the weekend lacked for nothing, especially hospitable and enthusiastic crowds. Racers and out-of-town fans alike had local folks actually thank them for bringing the event to their town. Throughout the weekend I heard from one local after another, “It’s the highlight of our summer.”
Port Huron and Sarnia team up for International Offshore Powerboat Race
Port Huron is getting ready for another weekend of boat racing.
Only this time, the boats are going to go across the St. Clair River much faster.
Just a few weeks after hosting the Mackinac Sailboat Race, the city has teamed up with neighboring Sarnia, Ontario, Canada to host the first-ever International Offshore Powerboat Race.
New York and New Jersey Race Fans Treated to Great Superboat Race
On the weekend of the 10-year Anniversary of 9/11, Super Boat International (SBI) race teams took to the Hudson River and it was Team Cintron taking the overall win. To accommodate Liberty State Park representatives and government officials, SBI completed their day of racing by 10:00 a.m. on Saturday September 10th out of respect for the families attending the special event.

In all my years of offshore boating, I never been behind the wheel in an offshore race. Well, today was the day I got to change that. Trent Weyant of TnT Racing gave me (Doreen Ungarten aka Dee) the opportunity to finally race.
